In 2014, Nicholas experienced depression and was unable to work. As part of his therapy, he returned to his childhood hobby of illustration. Sketching his pugs and miniature schnauzer brought light to dark days; now, with his illustrated children’s books, he's bringing light and joy to others.

Based in Cheshire, England, Nicholas Child created the award-nominated The Grumble & Co. Using his illustrations of his dogs and put them onto greetings cards.

Soon, what started out as a mindfulness exercise, turned into a full-time business selling his designs into the design-led Paperchase, nationally through Sainsbury’s and internationally through export.

Now, predominantly as a children’s picture book illustrator, Nicholas finds illustrations incredibly powerful, conveying more than words alone. A subtle eyebrow raise or a quick glance can create a dynamic and successful picture book illustration. Nicholas enjoys adding Easter eggs to his stories, ensuring readers discover something new with each enjoyment.

The Process

To create a successful children’s picture book, Nicholas approaches the manuscript with an open mind, inspired by Maurice Sendak’s quote: ‘If you have one style, then you’re going to do the same book over and over…’ Each picture book should have its unique style to match its soul.

Nicholas collaborates closely with his clients to ensure the style aligns with the story.

Nicholas experiments with digital and traditional styles, taking online courses from industry professionals and completing Curtis Brown’s Writing and Illustrating course for Picture Books. This keeps him focused, engaged, and his work fresh with each manuscript.
